Pro tip: Use our HEIC Analyzer first to check your image properties, or HEIC File Viewer to preview images before converting.

HEIF vs JPG Comparison

HEIF/HEIC

High Efficiency Image Format developed by MPEG. Default format on iOS 11+ and macOS High Sierra+. Offers 50% smaller file sizes than JPG with same quality. Supports HDR, depth maps, and live photos. Limited software compatibility outside Apple ecosystem. For icon creation, try HEIC to ICO.

JPG/JPEG

Universal image format supported everywhere. Best for photographs and complex images. Lossy compression with adjustable quality. No transparency support. Works on all devices, browsers, and software. Consider Compress JPG to further optimize file sizes.

Quality Settings Guide

90-100%

Maximum quality with minimal compression. Best for printing, archiving, and professional use. File sizes will be larger but quality is excellent.

75-89%

Excellent balance of quality and file size. Ideal for web use, email attachments, and social media sharing. Recommended for most users.

60-74%

Good quality with noticeable file size reduction. Suitable for web thumbnails, preview images, and when bandwidth is limited.

Below 60%

Visible compression artifacts. Only use when file size is critical. For better results, consider resizing first with our Image Resizer.

Frequently Asked Questions

HEIF is the container format, while HEIC is Apple's specific implementation using HEVC compression. For practical purposes, they're the same - both store high-efficiency images. Our converter handles both formats identically. You can also use our HEIC Analyzer to inspect file details.

At 90-100% quality, the difference is virtually imperceptible. JPG uses lossy compression, so some data is discarded, but at high quality settings the visual difference is minimal. For archival purposes, consider HEIC to PNG for lossless conversion.

Apple adopted HEIF/HEIC in iOS 11 because it stores photos at half the file size of JPG with the same quality. This saves storage space on your device. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats, but HEIF remains more efficient.

By default, we preserve all EXIF metadata including camera settings, date taken, and GPS location. You can disable this option if you prefer to strip metadata for privacy. The auto-rotate feature uses orientation data to display photos correctly.

Each file can be up to 25MB, and you can upload up to 15 files at once. This covers most iPhone photos. For larger batches, simply convert in multiple groups. Need to reduce file sizes? Try our JPG Compressor after conversion.

Files are temporarily stored only during conversion and automatically deleted within 24 hours. We process files securely and don't keep copies or use them for any purpose other than the conversion you requested.

This tool converts the still image portion of Live Photos. The video component is stored separately as a MOV file. For animated content, consider our GIF Maker or Video to GIF tools.
