About DOCX and Word Documents

DOCX is the default document format of Microsoft Word since 2007, and the de facto standard for text documents everywhere - Google Docs, LibreOffice, and Apple Pages all export it. A reliable DOCX viewer lets you open Word documents on any device with a browser, without an Office subscription or any installation.

Technically, a .docx file is a ZIP archive containing XML content, styles, and media - the Office Open XML standard. That structure is what this viewer unpacks and converts locally in your browser. If you ever want to inspect the raw files inside, you can browse a .docx in our Archive Viewer.

DOCX vs DOC

The older .doc format (Word 97-2003) is a binary format with a completely different internal structure, and it cannot be read by this viewer directly. If you have a legacy .doc file, open it in Word, LibreOffice, or Google Docs and save it as .docx first - the viewer will detect old .doc files and remind you.

Viewing Other Document Formats

For fixed-layout documents use our PDF Viewer, for ebooks the EPUB Viewer, and for lightweight text the TXT Viewer and Markdown Viewer. The full collection is on the file viewers page.
