What is HEIC Format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default image format for iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard to store images with significantly better compression than JPEG while maintaining higher quality.

While HEIC files are about 50% smaller than equivalent JPEGs, they're not universally supported across all platforms and applications. Converting to JPG ensures your photos can be viewed, shared, and edited anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Windows doesn't natively support HEIC format. You can either install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, or simply convert your HEIC files to JPG using our free tool for instant compatibility.

At 92% quality (our default), the difference is virtually imperceptible. JPG uses lossy compression, so there's technically some quality loss, but it's minimal at higher quality settings. For archival purposes, you can use 100% quality.

No! Our converter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your photos never leave your device, making this the most private way to convert HEIC files online.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the broader standard, while HEIC is Apple's specific implementation using HEVC compression. For practical purposes, they're interchangeable, and our converter handles both formats identically.

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select "Most Compatible" instead of "High Efficiency". This will make your iPhone save photos as JPG by default, though files will be larger.
