How to Crop an Animated GIF

  1. Upload your animated GIF using drag and drop or the file browser (up to 15 MB).
  2. Choose a crop shape - rectangle or circle. Circle crops produce a transparent background using our GIF editor workflow.
  3. Select an aspect ratio preset (1:1, 16:9, 4:3...) or use free-form cropping for any custom size.
  4. Drag the selection to position it, or type exact pixel coordinates in the X/Y/W/H fields below the preview.
  5. Click "Crop GIF" and download your cropped animation. Use our GIF resizer to hit exact platform dimensions, or compress it if the file is still too large.

Crop Shape Options

Rectangle

Standard rectangular crop with optional aspect ratio lock. Perfect for removing unwanted edges or matching social media dimensions. Supports presets like 1:1 (square), 16:9 (widescreen), and 9:16 (Stories/Reels). After cropping, use the GIF resizer to scale to exact pixels.

Circle

Crops your GIF into a perfect circle with a transparent background - ideal for profile pictures, avatars, and round icons. For smoother circle edges, convert the result to animated WebP, which supports full alpha transparency instead of GIF's 1-bit mask.

Tips for Better Crops

Precision Input

Type exact values into the X, Y, W, H fields for pixel-perfect crops. You can also use the arrow keys to nudge the selection 1px at a time - hold Shift for 10px steps.

Social Media Sizes

Use 1:1 for Instagram posts, 9:16 for Stories and TikTok, and 16:9 for YouTube and Twitter. Then run through the GIF resizer to match exact platform pixel requirements.

Reduce File Size

Cropping naturally shrinks file size by removing pixel data from each frame. For even smaller results, follow up with our GIF compressor, or convert to MP4 for dramatic size reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Cropping only changes which area is kept - frame timing, colors, and delays are all preserved. We use ImageMagick to coalesce and re-optimize each frame so the animation plays exactly as before, just with the selected region.

We first crop a square region, then apply a circular transparency mask to every frame. GIF only supports 1-bit transparency, so edges may appear slightly aliased. For smooth circles, convert your result to animated WebP, which supports full alpha.

For Instagram posts and profile pictures use 1:1. YouTube thumbnails and Twitter/X posts work best at 16:9. Instagram Stories, TikTok, and Snapchat use 9:16. After cropping, use our GIF resizer to set the exact pixel dimensions each platform requires.

This tool focuses on spatial cropping (selecting a region of the image). To cut frames from the start, middle, or end, use our GIF Cutter. Combine both tools - cut first, then crop the visual area.

GIF files up to 15 MB are supported. For larger files, run them through our GIF compressor first to bring the size down, then crop.
