Icon=icon.ico
autorun.inf file with the content shown below.
To display your custom icon on a USB drive in Windows, create a file named autorun.inf in the root of your drive with the following content:
[AutoRun] Icon=icon.ico Label=My Drive
Label=My Drive to your preferred drive name.
Portable USB sticks and thumb drives. Common sizes: 4GB to 256GB.
Portable external hard drives. Typical capacities: 500GB to 8TB.
Solid state drives, including portable SSDs and M.2 drives. 128GB to 4TB.
Desktop and laptop internal hard drives. 500GB to 20TB.
Standard SD cards for cameras and devices. 8GB to 1TB.
MicroSD cards for phones and small devices. 8GB to 1TB.
Network attached storage and mapped network drives.
Optical discs: CD (700MB), DVD (4.7/8.5GB), Blu-ray (25/50GB).
Cloud drives like Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive icons.
Custom icons help you quickly identify different drives when multiple are connected. Instead of generic Windows icons, you'll see labeled icons showing capacity or purpose (BACKUP, WORK, etc.), making file management much faster.
For removable drives (USB, SD): Copy the ICO file to the drive and create autorun.inf with [AutoRun] on line 1 and Icon=filename.ico on line 2. For fixed drives: Right-click the drive in Explorer, select Properties, then Customize tab, and click Change Icon.
For best Windows compatibility, include 16px (details view), 32px (small icons), 48px (medium), and 256px (large icons/thumbnails). The 64px and 128px sizes are optional but provide smoother scaling in some views.
Yes! Switch to the "Custom" label type and enter any text up to 12 characters. Common uses include drive names (BACKUP, WORK), owner names, or project codes. Shorter text (4-8 chars) displays best at small sizes.
Mac uses ICNS format instead of ICO. Download the PNG version here, then use our PNG to ICNS converter to create Mac-compatible icons. You can then apply the ICNS file to drives via Get Info.
Absolutely. All icon generation happens directly in your browser using JavaScript and HTML5 Canvas. No data is uploaded to any server. Your customizations and downloads are 100% private and local.
