HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It uses HEVC (H.265) compression to make photos about half the size of a JPEG at the same quality.
The catch is support - Windows, many websites and older editors cannot open it. Convert to JPG for sharing, to PNG for lossless editing, or check the details first in the HEIC Analyzer.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's photo format. It uses HEVC compression to make photos about 50% smaller than JPEG at the same quality, and iPhones running iOS 11 or later save photos as HEIC by default.
Windows 10 and 11 need the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, and the HEVC one is not always free. The quick route is HEIC to JPG, which makes a file every PC can open.

HEIF is the container format, and HEIC is a HEIF file that uses HEVC compression - the version Apple uses. Our converters accept both .heic and .heif files. Android and camera files are covered by the HEIF converters. More detail in our HEIC vs HEIF guide.
A little, because JPG is lossy too, but at 90% quality or higher the difference is very hard to see. For a lossless copy, use HEIC to PNG instead.
