JXL Converters

Open JPEG XL images as JPG, PNG or WebP - or shrink your photos by converting them to JXL.

JPEG XL is the next-generation JPEG, with smaller files, lossless mode, transparency and HDR.

Browser support is still patchy, so these converters help you share JXL files with anyone.

About the JPEG XL format

JPEG XL (JXL) is a modern image format from the JPEG committee, built to replace both JPEG and PNG. It offers lossy and lossless compression, progressive decoding, HDR and wide colour gamut.

Its party trick is lossless JPEG recompression: an existing JPG becomes about 20% smaller and can be restored bit for bit. For the widest browser support today, use WebP or the AVIF converters instead.

Smaller files

Often 30-60% smaller than JPG at the same quality

Lossless mode

Pixel-perfect, and usually smaller than PNG

JPEG transcoding

Recompress JPGs and restore them exactly

HDR and wide gamut

Up to 32 bits per channel

Why use JPEG XL?

Save storage space

Shrink a photo archive with JPG to JXL. Lossless transcoding keeps every original pixel.

Replace PNG files

JXL lossless mode usually beats PNG by 30-50%. Try PNG to JXL on your screenshots and graphics.

iPhone photos

Turn HEIC pictures into an open format with HEIC to JXL, keeping quality high and files small.

Share with anyone

Not everyone can open JXL yet. Send a JPG or PNG copy and keep the JXL for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image - the successor to JPEG designed by the same committee. It combines strong compression, lossless and lossy modes, transparency, animation and HDR in one format.

Safari on recent macOS and iOS opens JXL natively, and so do many photo apps. Elsewhere, convert it with JXL to JPG or JXL to PNG and it will open anywhere.

JXL often compresses better than WebP and is close to AVIF, and it handles very large images and lossless work especially well. Its weak point is browser support.

For websites today, JXL to WebP is the safe choice.

Yes, if the JXL was made by losslessly recompressing a JPG - the original file can be rebuilt exactly. Other JXL files are re-encoded, so pick a high quality setting in JXL to JPG.

Safari supports JPEG XL on macOS Sonoma and iOS 17 or newer. Chrome and Firefox support is still limited or behind flags.

For other visitors, serve a WebP or PNG copy.

Typically 30-60% smaller at the same visual quality, and about 20% smaller when a JPG is recompressed losslessly. The JXL compressor can squeeze existing JXL files further.

Yes, JPEG XL has a full alpha channel. Convert transparent images with PNG to JXL and the transparency is kept.
