How to Crop an Animated GIF

  1. Upload your animated GIF file using drag & drop or the file browser.
  2. Choose a crop shape - rectangle or circle. For circle crops, the output will include a transparent background.
  3. Select an aspect ratio preset (1:1, 16:9, 4:3, etc.) or use free-form cropping.
  4. Drag the crop selection to position it, or enter exact pixel coordinates in the dimension fields.
  5. Click "Crop GIF" and download your cropped animation. You can also resize your GIF afterward or compress it if the file size is too large.

Crop Shape Options

Rectangle

Standard rectangular crop with optional aspect ratio lock. Perfect for social media dimensions, thumbnails, or removing unwanted edges from your GIF. Supports presets like 1:1 (square), 16:9 (widescreen), and 9:16 (stories).

Circle

Crop your GIF into a perfect circle with transparent background. Ideal for profile pictures, avatars, and social media icons. The output uses GIF transparency to create a clean circular shape. Convert to animated WebP for better transparency support.

Tips for Cropping GIFs

Precision

Use the pixel dimension inputs to set exact crop coordinates. You can also use arrow keys to nudge the selection by 1px, or hold Shift for 10px increments.

Social Media

Use the 1:1 aspect ratio for Instagram posts, 9:16 for Stories and TikTok, or 16:9 for YouTube thumbnails. After cropping, you can use the GIF resizer to match exact platform dimensions.

File Size

Cropping reduces file size by removing pixel data. For even smaller files, use our GIF compressor after cropping, or convert to MP4 video for dramatic size reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, cropping preserves the original frame quality and timing. We use ImageMagick to precisely extract the crop region from each frame while maintaining colors, delays, and optimization. The animation plays exactly as before, just with the selected area.

Circle cropping first extracts a square region from your GIF, then applies a circular transparency mask to each frame. The areas outside the circle become transparent. The GIF format has limited transparency support (1-bit), so edges may appear slightly jagged. For smoother circles, consider converting to animated WebP.

For Instagram posts and profile pictures, use 1:1. For YouTube thumbnails and Twitter/X posts, use 16:9. For Instagram Stories, TikTok, and Snapchat, use 9:16. Facebook posts work best with 4:3 or 16:9. After cropping, use our GIF resizer to set the exact pixel dimensions each platform requires.

This tool focuses on spatial cropping (selecting an area of the image). To trim the timeline and remove frames, use our GIF cutter. You can combine both tools - first cut the frames you want, then crop the visible area.

You can upload GIF files up to 15MB in size. For larger files, consider using our GIF compressor first to reduce the file size before cropping.
