About HEIC and GIF Formats

HEIC

High Efficiency Image Container is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It offers superior compression compared to JPG while maintaining quality. HEIC supports HDR, depth maps, and multiple images. However, compatibility outside Apple devices can be limited. Use our HEIC converters for universal compatibility.

GIF

Graphics Interchange Format supports animations and transparency but is limited to 256 colors per frame. Best for simple graphics, logos, icons, and short animations. For photos, consider JPG or WebP formats instead.

When to Use HEIC to GIF Conversion

Good For

  • Creating animations from photo sequences
  • Simple graphics with few colors
  • Social media reactions and memes
  • Universal format compatibility
  • Small file size for web use

Not Ideal For

  • High-quality photos (use JPG)
  • Images with gradients or many colors
  • Professional photography
  • Printing purposes
  • Full transparency needs (use PNG)

Settings Guide

Colors

256 colors gives the best quality but larger files. 64-128 colors is a good balance. 16-32 colors creates the smallest files, ideal for simple graphics. Experiment to find the right balance for your images.

Dithering

Floyd-Steinberg creates smooth gradients by mixing pixels, best for photos. Ordered creates a pattern effect, faster processing. None uses solid colors only, best for graphics with sharp edges.

Frame Delay

For animated GIFs, 100-200ms creates smooth animations. 500ms+ is better for slideshows. Very fast animations (50ms) may not play correctly on all devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default image format for iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It provides excellent compression while maintaining high quality, but isn't universally supported. That's why converters like this one are essential. For detailed file analysis, try our HEIC Analyzer.

GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, which can cause banding and graininess in photos with smooth gradients. Try increasing the color count to 256 and using Floyd-Steinberg dithering. For better photo quality, convert to JPG or WebP instead.

This tool converts the still HEIC images. For Live Photos, you'll need to export the video component separately. However, you can upload multiple HEIC images and use the "Animated GIF" mode to create animations from a sequence of photos.

GIF uses lossless compression which can result in large files, especially for photos. To reduce file size: lower the color count (64 or 32), resize to smaller dimensions, or use our GIF Resizer. For better compression with animations, consider WebP format.

We use a hybrid approach. Most conversions happen directly in your browser for privacy and speed. If your browser doesn't support HEIC decoding, we securely process files on our server and automatically delete them within 24 hours.

Each file can be up to 25MB, and you can upload up to 20 files at once. For creating animated GIFs, all files will be combined into one animation. For larger files, consider using our Image Resizer to reduce dimensions first.
