About HEIC Format

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default image format for iOS 11+ and macOS High Sierra+. It offers significantly better compression than JPEG (up to 50% smaller file sizes) while maintaining high image quality. HEIC supports features like transparency, depth maps, Live Photos, and HDR content.

Our converter handles HEIC's advanced features including wide color gamut (Display P3), HDR content from newer iPhones, and EXIF metadata to create crisp, professional icons from your Apple device photos.

Pro tip: HEIC images from iPhones often contain rich color data in Display P3 color space. Use the "Display P3" color gamut option to preserve the full color range, or "sRGB" for maximum web compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! iPhone photos taken on iOS 11 and later are saved in HEIC format by default. Simply AirDrop or transfer your photos to your computer and upload them here to convert to ICO format. You can also use iCloud, email, or any file transfer method.

HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container format specification, while HEIC specifically uses HEVC (H.265) compression for the image data. In practice, they're often used interchangeably. Our converter supports both .heic and .heif file extensions seamlessly.

Live Photos include both a still image and a video component. Our converter extracts the high-quality still image portion (the key frame) and converts it to ICO. The motion video portion is not included in the icon output.

Yes! HDR content from iPhone 12 and later models is fully supported. The converter tone-maps HDR images to SDR for the ICO output while preserving as much detail and dynamic range as possible for the best icon quality.

For website favicons, we recommend at least 16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 pixels. Use our "Favicon" preset to select these automatically. For modern browsers and high-DPI displays, consider also including 64×64 and 128×128 sizes.

Files are temporarily stored only during the conversion process and are automatically deleted within 1 hour. We don't keep copies of your images, share them, or use them for any other purpose. Your privacy is protected.

You can upload HEIC files up to 10MB in size. This is sufficient for most iPhone photos, including ProRAW images. If you have larger files, consider using our image compression tools first.
