ICNS files are typically inside application bundles. Right-click any app in your Applications folder, choose "Show Package Contents", then navigate to Contents/Resources. Look for files ending in .icns - the main app icon is usually named AppIcon.icns or similar.
Not all ICNS files contain every possible size. Older apps may only include smaller sizes (up to 512x512), while very old icons might only have 128x128 and below. Modern apps should include all sizes up to 1024x1024 for Retina support.
