  4. Convert and download: Click convert and download individual PNG frames or all selected frames as a ZIP archive.

Static vs Animated GIF Conversion

Static GIF

A static GIF contains only one frame, just like a regular image. When you convert it to PNG, you get a single PNG file with the same dimensions. This is useful when you have a GIF that was saved in GIF format but isn't actually animated. Consider using our PNG to WebP converter afterward for better web compression, or PNG to JPG if you don't need transparency.

Animated GIF

An animated GIF contains multiple frames that play in sequence. Our tool lets you extract all frames as separate PNG files, get just the first or last frame, or select specific frames you need. This is perfect for creating sprites, thumbnails, or getting high-quality stills from animations. You can recombine frames using our GIF Maker or convert to WebP format for smaller animations.

Frame Extraction Options

All Frames

Extracts every single frame from the animated GIF as separate PNG files. Perfect for sprite sheets, video editing, or when you need the complete animation sequence.

First Frame

Gets only the first frame of the animation. Great for creating thumbnails, preview images, or when you just need a static version of an animated GIF.

Last Frame

Extracts the final frame of the animation. Useful when the animation ends on a specific image you want to capture.

Specific Frame

Enter a frame number (0-indexed) to extract just that one frame. Perfect when you've identified exactly which frame you need.

Frame Range

Extract a sequence of frames (e.g., frames 5-15). Ideal when you only need a portion of the animation.

GIF vs PNG Comparison

Converting GIF to PNG is ideal when you need higher color depth, better transparency handling, or want to edit individual frames. For web images, also consider converting to WebP format for better compression, or use our PNG Compressor to optimize file sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simply upload your GIF file using the upload area above. For static GIFs, it converts directly to a single PNG. For animated GIFs, choose your extraction mode (all frames, first frame, last frame, or specific frames), then click Convert. Download individual frames or all as a ZIP file.

Yes! Our tool automatically detects animated GIFs and gives you options to extract all frames, just the first or last frame, a specific frame number, or a range of frames. Each frame is saved as a separate PNG file with full quality. For more advanced frame manipulation, try our dedicated GIF Frame Extractor.

Yes! PNG supports full alpha channel transparency. When converting a GIF with transparent areas, the transparency is preserved in the PNG output. PNG actually has better transparency support than GIF, allowing for smooth edges and partial transparency.

After uploading your animated GIF, select the "First Frame" option in the extraction settings. Click Convert, and you'll get just the first frame as a PNG file. This is perfect for creating thumbnails or static previews of animated content.

GIF supports only 256 colors and simple on/off transparency, but can contain animations. PNG supports millions of colors and smooth alpha transparency, but doesn't support animation (except APNG). Convert to PNG when you need better color quality or transparency, or when extracting frames from animations.

Each GIF file can be up to 50MB, and you can upload up to 10 files at once. This generous limit supports even large, high-resolution animated GIFs. For very large files, consider using our GIF Resizer to reduce dimensions first, or Compress PNG to optimize the output files.

Yes! You can extract a specific single frame by entering its frame number (0-indexed), or extract a range of frames by specifying start and end frame numbers. After conversion, you can also select which frames to download from the results grid.
