AVIF offers better compression than HEIF (often 20-50% smaller files) with comparable quality. Unlike HEIF, AVIF has excellent browser support, making it ideal for web use. It's also a free, open standard without licensing concerns.
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container format, while HEIC is Apple's specific implementation using HEVC codec. In practice, they're used interchangeably for iPhone photos. This converter supports both .heif and .heic file extensions.
Both HEIF and AVIF use lossy compression, so there's minimal additional quality loss when converting at high quality settings (80-100%). For archival purposes, use lossless mode or maximum quality. At typical web quality (70-85%), differences are imperceptible to most viewers.
Yes! When you enable "Preserve EXIF metadata," the converter maintains photo information like capture date, camera settings, GPS location (if present), and other metadata. You can disable this for privacy if you plan to share photos publicly.
Files are temporarily stored only during the conversion process and are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We don't keep copies of your images and don't use them for any other purpose. Your privacy is important to us.
AVIF has excellent browser support: Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Edge 121+, and Safari 16+. This covers over 90% of web users. For older browsers, consider using AVIF with a WebP or JPEG fallback.
