How to Convert MP4 to GIF

  1. Upload your video file (MP4, WebM, MOV, or AVI) by dropping it in the upload area or clicking to browse.
  2. Set the start and end time to trim the clip. GIFs work best when they are short - aim for 2 to 10 seconds for the best balance of quality and file size.
  3. Adjust the frame rate (10 fps is a good starting point), output width, color count, and dithering method.
  4. Click "Convert to GIF" to start FFmpeg's two-pass palette-optimized conversion.
  5. Download your animated GIF! If it is too large, try reducing the width or frame rate, or use our GIF compressor.

Frequently Asked Questions

10 fps is a great default - it provides smooth motion while keeping file sizes reasonable. Use 5 fps for simple animations or text-based content where smoothness is less important. Use 15-20 fps for action scenes or when you need fluid motion. Going above 20 fps rarely adds visible quality but increases file size significantly.

GIF file size depends on duration, resolution, frame rate, and color complexity. To reduce size, try trimming to a shorter clip (2-5 seconds is ideal), lowering the output width to 320px or 480px, reducing the frame rate to 10 fps or lower, or reducing the color palette. You can also use our GIF compressor for further optimization, or resize the GIF after creation.

Dithering is a technique to simulate colors that are not in the GIF's limited 256-color palette by blending neighboring pixels. Sierra (recommended) gives the best visual results for most content. Floyd-Steinberg is similar but slightly sharper. Bayer creates a distinctive cross-hatch pattern - smaller files but a retro look. None uses no dithering, resulting in flat color bands - best only for simple graphics.

We support most common video formats including MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V, OGV, and WMV. If you have a video in another format, try our GIF to MP4 converter for the reverse direction, or convert your file to MP4 first using a video converter.

You can upload videos up to 100MB. The GIF output is limited to 30 seconds maximum to keep file sizes manageable. For longer videos, use the trim controls to select the best 30-second clip. Short clips (2-10 seconds) produce the best GIFs in terms of quality and file size.
