  6. Download individual files or use the ZIP option for batch downloads. Use our Image Resizer first if you need to resize before converting.

PNG vs JPEG XL Comparison

PNG

Lossless format with excellent transparency support. Ideal for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images requiring pixel-perfect accuracy. Larger file sizes due to older compression algorithms. Universal browser support since 1996. Consider using our PNG Compressor if you need to keep the PNG format.

JXL

Next-generation format with state-of-the-art compression. Achieves 30-60% smaller files than PNG in lossless mode. Supports transparency, HDR, wide color gamut, progressive decoding, and animation. Can also losslessly recompress existing JPEGs to ~20% smaller files.

Encoding Settings Guide

Lossless

Preserves every pixel exactly as in the original PNG. File sizes typically 30-60% smaller than PNG with identical visual quality. Perfect for archival, professional work, or images that will undergo further editing.

90-100%

Near-lossless quality. Best for photography where slight compression is acceptable but quality is paramount. Use Image Enhancer before converting for optimal results.

75-85%

Excellent balance of quality and file size. Recommended for most web use cases. Imperceptible quality loss while achieving 70-85% file size reduction compared to PNG.

Frequently Asked Questions

JPEG XL offers significantly better compression than PNG - achieving 30-60% smaller file sizes in lossless mode with identical quality. This means faster page loads, reduced bandwidth costs, and smaller storage requirements. JXL also supports progressive decoding, allowing images to display progressively as they load - unlike PNG which must fully download before displaying.

Yes! JPEG XL fully supports alpha channel transparency, just like PNG. When you enable "Preserve transparency" in the settings, all transparent areas in your PNG will be maintained in the converted JXL file. This makes JXL excellent for logos, icons, and graphics with transparent backgrounds. You can also use our PNG Background Remover to add transparency before converting.

Higher encoding effort produces smaller files but takes longer to encode. Effort 3 (Fast) is good for quick conversions. Effort 7 (Quality) provides excellent compression and is recommended for most uses. Effort 9 (Maximum) squeezes out every last byte but can be significantly slower - best for archival or when storage is critical.

Safari 17+ has native JXL support. Firefox and Chrome have experimental support that can be enabled via browser flags. While browser support is still growing, JXL is excellent for archival and applications where you control the viewing environment. For broader web compatibility, consider also converting to WebP or AVIF as fallbacks.

Files are temporarily stored only during the conversion process and are automatically deleted within 24 hours. We don't keep permanent copies of your images and don't use them for any purpose other than conversion. Your privacy and data security are our priority. We recommend downloading your converted files promptly.

Yes! Our converter supports batch processing of up to 10 PNG files simultaneously. Simply drag and drop multiple files or use the file browser to select several images. All files will be converted using the same quality settings, and you can download them individually or as a single ZIP archive.
