Unlike standard GIF animations, a Ugoira file is a ZIP archive containing sequenced JPEG or PNG image frames, paired with a JSON manifest that defines the display duration for each frame. This approach gives artists much higher image quality and color depth compared to GIF's 256-color limitation, while still allowing animation with precise timing control.
Because Ugoira is a Pixiv-specific format, the files can't be played in standard image viewers or shared on social media directly. Converting them to formats like GIF, MP4, or WebM makes them universally viewable while preserving the animation the artist intended.

You can export Ugoira files from Pixiv using browser extensions like "Pixiv Toolkit" (available for Chrome and Firefox). These extensions add a download button to Ugoira posts that lets you save the animation as a ZIP file containing all the frames and timing data.
A Ugoira ZIP should contain sequenced image files (JPEG or PNG) named in order (e.g., 000000.jpg, 000001.jpg, etc.). It may also include a JSON manifest file with frame delay timing. If no manifest is found, a default delay of 100ms per frame is applied.
Choose GIF for universal compatibility (works everywhere), MP4 for the smallest file size with great quality (best for Discord and social media), or WebM for modern browsers with excellent quality. If the original Ugoira uses many colors or gradients, MP4 or WebM will preserve quality better than GIF.
GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, while Ugoira frames can be full-color JPEG or PNG images. This color reduction can cause slight banding or dithering on complex illustrations. For the highest quality conversion, try MP4 or WebM format instead, which support millions of colors.
You can upload Ugoira ZIP files up to 50MB. Most Ugoira files are well under this limit. If your file is larger, the original Pixiv post likely has very high resolution frames - try re-exporting at a smaller resolution.
