GIF Color Settings Explained

2-32

Low color count. Best for simple graphics, text, and icons with few colors. Creates the smallest files but may look pixelated for photos.

64-128

Balanced quality. Good for illustrations and graphics with moderate complexity. Reasonable quality with decent file size.

192-256

Maximum quality. Best for detailed graphics. Largest file size but best visual appearance. For photos, consider AVIF to PNG instead.

Enable dithering when reducing colors significantly to create smoother gradients and avoid banding artifacts.

Frequently Asked Questions

While AVIF offers superior compression and quality, it's still a new format that isn't supported everywhere. GIF has universal compatibility - every browser, operating system, email client, and image viewer supports it.

GIF is limited to 256 colors, so photos and complex images will lose some quality. For simple graphics and logos, the difference is usually minimal. If quality is critical, consider using PNG which supports millions of colors.

GIF only supports binary transparency (pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque). If your AVIF has semi-transparent areas, they will be converted to either transparent or solid. For full alpha transparency support, use our AVIF to PNG converter.

Dithering is a technique that creates patterns of colored pixels to simulate colors that aren't in the palette. It helps smooth gradients and reduce visible banding when using fewer colors. Floyd-Steinberg is the most common algorithm.

This converter handles static images only. For animated AVIF, only the first frame will be converted. Check our GIF tools collection for editing and optimization options.

Files are temporarily stored only during conversion and automatically deleted within 24 hours. When possible, conversions happen in your browser for maximum privacy.
