How to Open an Archive File Online

1

Upload your archive

Drag a ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2 or XZ file onto the upload area, or click to browse your device. The archive is read in your browser using WebAssembly - nothing is uploaded to a server.

2

Browse the contents

Click folders or use the breadcrumb trail to navigate. Use the search bar to find files by name across the whole archive.

3

Preview supported files

Click any text, code, or image file to open it inline - no download needed. Useful for checking what's inside before extracting.

4

Download what you need

Grab single files with the download icon, hand-pick items via the checkboxes, or click Extract All as ZIP to bundle everything with a branded README.

Need a format-specific tool? Try the ZIP Viewer, RAR Viewer, or 7Z Viewer for those archive types, the TAR Viewer for tarballs, the GZ Opener for .gz log and data files, the ISO File Viewer for disc images, or the CAB File Viewer for Microsoft Cabinet packages and Windows Updates. Want to build a new archive instead? Use the Archive Creator.

About Archive Formats

Archive files are containers that bundle multiple files and folders into one compressed package. They are essential for distributing software, backing up data, sharing large collections, and saving storage space. Each format has its own strengths:

  • ZIP - the most universal format, supported natively by Windows, macOS and Linux - dedicated ZIP Viewer available
  • RAR - WinRAR's proprietary format with excellent compression, common for game mods and large downloads - see the RAR Viewer
  • 7Z - the best compression ratios using LZMA/LZMA2, ideal for source code and software distributions - dedicated 7Z Viewer available
  • TAR / TAR.GZ / TAR.BZ2 / TAR.XZ - Unix/Linux tape archives, usually combined with a compression layer - see the TAR Viewer
  • GZ / BZ2 / XZ - single-file compression streams, often used for log files - see our GZ Opener
  • ISO / CAB - disc images and Microsoft Cabinet installer packages - see the dedicated ISO File Viewer and CAB File Viewer

This viewer runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, so it works on any device that runs a modern browser - even Chromebooks, work-locked PCs, and mobile devices where you can't install desktop tools like 7-Zip or WinRAR. For Windows users who do need to extract installers, the EXE Icon Extractor and DLL Icon Extractor can pull icons and resources out of executables.

Frequently Asked Questions

ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ, TAR.BZ2, TAR.XZ, GZ, BZ2, XZ, ISO and CAB. All formats are read in the browser using WebAssembly - no software installation required. For dedicated single-format tools, try the ZIP Viewer, RAR Viewer, 7Z Viewer, TAR Viewer, GZ Opener, ISO File Viewer, or CAB File Viewer.

No - the entire archive is read and decompressed in your browser using WebAssembly. Your files never leave your device, which makes this safe for source code, private documents, and confidential backups. Still concerned? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!

Yes - click Extract All as ZIP at the top right of the viewer. The tool decompresses every file in the archive, preserves the original folder structure, and packages everything as a single ZIP with a README inside. You can also tick individual files or folders with the checkboxes to bundle a custom selection, or download single files one at a time using the download icon next to each entry.

Password-protected ZIP and 7Z files work - you will be prompted for the password before the file list is displayed, and the password stays in your browser. RAR encrypted archives have limited support depending on the encryption method used (some older RAR3 schemes work, RAR5 with header encryption may not).

The viewer handles archives up to 500 MB comfortably on modern devices. Larger archives may work but parsing speed depends on your available memory. The file list typically loads quickly even when full extraction takes longer - so you can browse and download individual files without waiting for the whole archive to decompress.

Yes - click any file to preview its contents inline. Text files, source code, JSON, XML, HTML, CSV and common image formats (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, ICO) all preview directly in the browser. Binary files show a download prompt. For specialized previews, see our 200+ file viewers.

Use the Archive Creator to bundle files into a new ZIP, TAR, or TAR.GZ archive entirely in your browser. If you need to convert images first - say, build an icon pack - try the PNG to ICO converter or the Image to ICO converter before archiving.
