Standard Favicon Sizes Explained

16×16 & 32×32

Essential browser favicon sizes. 16×16 appears in browser tabs, while 32×32 is used for taskbar shortcuts and bookmarks. Generate both using our Favicon Generator.

48×48

64×64 to 256×256

Windows desktop icons, tiles, and high-DPI displays. 256×256 is recommended for modern Windows. Convert to ICO with our PNG to ICO converter.

180×180

192×192 & 512×512

Favicon Resizing Best Practices

Start with a large source image

Use at least 512×512 pixels for the best quality when scaling down. Our Image Upscaler can help if your source is too small.

Use square images

Favicons should be perfectly square. Non-square images will be centered with padding added.

Keep designs simple

Small icons lose detail quickly. Use bold shapes and high contrast. Test how your icon looks at 16×16.

Avoid text in favicons

Text becomes unreadable below 32×32 pixels. Use symbols, icons, or your logo's icon version instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

At minimum, include 16×16 (browser tabs), 32×32 (taskbar), and 48×48 (Google search). For complete coverage, also add 180×180 (Apple) and 192×192 (Android). Our Favicon Generator creates all sizes automatically.

Use both. PNG is better quality and works in modern browsers. ICO is required for older Internet Explorer versions and Windows shortcuts. The ICO format can contain multiple sizes in one file. Use our PNG to ICO converter for easy conversion.

Scaling down from a large source preserves quality well. Our tool uses high-quality bicubic interpolation. Scaling up small images may cause blurriness—use our Image Upscaler for AI-enhanced upscaling first.

Non-square images are automatically centered on a transparent background. The largest dimension is scaled to fit, and the shorter dimension is padded. For better control, use our Image Cropper to crop to square first.
