About ICNS Format

ICNS is Apple's native icon format for macOS applications, folders, and system icons. Unlike Windows ICO files, ICNS files can contain very high-resolution images up to 1024×1024 pixels for Retina displays. Each ICNS file bundles multiple icon sizes together, ensuring your icon looks crisp on any Mac display from standard to 5K resolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

ICNS is Apple's icon file format used for macOS applications, folders, and system icons. Like Windows ICO files, ICNS files contain multiple icon sizes in one file, but ICNS supports much higher resolutions (up to 1024×1024 pixels) for Retina and high-DPI displays. Every Mac app needs an ICNS file for its application icon.

A complete ICNS file typically includes: 16×16, 32×32, 64×64, 128×128, 256×256, 512×512, and 1024×1024 pixels. For Retina displays, @2x versions are also included (32×32@2x, 64×64@2x, etc.). Our converters automatically generate all required sizes from your source image.

To change a folder or file icon: Right-click the item, select "Get Info", click the icon in the top-left corner, then paste your ICNS file (Cmd+V). For applications, the ICNS file must be placed in the app bundle's Resources folder with the correct name specified in Info.plist.

ICO is the Windows icon format (max 256×256px), while ICNS is the macOS format (max 1024×1024px). If you're developing cross-platform applications, you'll need both formats. Use our ICO to ICNS and ICNS to ICO converters to convert between them.

PNG is the best source format because it supports transparency. Start with a 1024×1024 pixel PNG image with a transparent background for optimal results. Our converter will automatically generate all the smaller sizes needed for a complete ICNS file.
