Our tool shelf is big, though. Try the site search or .
Audio files are either lossless (an exact copy of the recording) or lossy (smaller, with sounds you are unlikely to hear removed). Pick lossless for editing and archiving, and lossy for sharing and listening on the go.
Lossy and plays on everything. The safe choice for phones, cars and sharing.
Uncompressed PCM - about 10 MB per minute. Made for recording and editing.
Lossless and roughly half the size of WAV. Ideal for music collections.
Apple's format for voice memos and iTunes - better than MP3 at the same bitrate.
Open formats used by games, Discord and the web. Opus sounds great at low bitrates.
MP3, FLAC and M4A carry title, artist and album. Our MP3 converters keep them.
| Format | Type | Size per minute (stereo) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | Lossless, uncompressed | About 10 MB | Recording, editing, mastering |
| FLAC | Lossless, compressed | About 5-7 MB | Archiving music in full quality |
| MP3 320 kbps | Lossy | About 2.4 MB | Best-quality MP3 for favourites |
| MP3 192 kbps | Lossy | About 1.4 MB | Everyday music listening |
| M4A (AAC 256 kbps) | Lossy | About 1.9 MB | iPhone, iTunes, Apple Music |
| OGG / Opus 128 kbps | Lossy | About 1 MB | Games, web, voice chat |
Converting lossless to lossy is fine. Going the other way cannot bring lost detail back, so keep your WAV or FLAC originals if you might edit again. Need test files? Grab the WAV or MP3 samples.
A higher bitrate cannot add quality the source never had. Converting a 128 kbps file at 320 kbps only makes it bigger.
Pick the converter for your file - WAV to MP3, FLAC to MP3 or M4A to MP3. Drop your files in, choose a preset and press Convert.
One or two files download directly, more come as a ZIP.
Not by the MP3 converters. WAV, FLAC and M4A to MP3 decode and encode the audio on your own device, so private recordings never leave it.
Tools that do need our server delete uploads automatically after a few hours.
192 kbps is the sweet spot for music. Use 320 kbps for archiving, 128 kbps for background listening, and 96 kbps mono for speech and podcasts.
MP3 is lossy, so a little detail is removed - mostly sounds people cannot hear. At 192 kbps and above it is very hard to tell from the original.
Keep your WAV or FLAC files if you plan to edit again.
Both are lossless and sound identical. FLAC is compressed, so it is roughly half the size, and it stores tags such as title and artist. WAV is uncompressed and easier for some editing software to open.
Use the Audio Joiner for mixed formats, or the format-specific tools: Merge MP3, Merge WAV, Merge FLAC, Merge M4A and Merge OGG.
Yes. Video to MP3 extracts the soundtrack from MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and more. For a public post on X, use Twitter to MP3.
The FLAC and M4A to MP3 converters copy title, artist, album and year into ID3 tags, and you can edit them before converting. WAV files rarely carry tags, so you can type them in.
