Check an animated PNG - frame count, every delay, FPS, loop count, disposal and blend modes - and catch broken frame sequences before you publish it. Need a version that plays everywhere? Use APNG to GIF.
Making an APNG? GIF to APNG turns any GIF into an animated PNG with full transparency.
| APNG | GIF | |
|---|---|---|
| Colours | Millions (24-bit) | 256 per frame |
| Transparency | Smooth (8-bit alpha) | On/off |
| Plays in | All modern browsers | Everything |
| Chats and email | Often shown as a still | Animated |
| File size | Often bigger for photos | Often smaller for flat art |
APNG looks better, GIF plays in more places. Convert between them with APNG to GIF and GIF to APNG.
An APNG is a normal PNG with three extra chunks.
Apps that do not know APNG simply show the first image.
Every fcTL and fdAT has a sequence number. A gap or duplicate breaks the animation in strict players - the analyzer checks them all.
| Setting | Value | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Disposal | none | Leave the frame on the canvas |
| Disposal | background | Clear the frame area to transparent |
| Disposal | previous | Restore what was there before |
| Blend | source | Replace the pixels |
| Blend | over | Draw over them using alpha |
Wrong settings leave trails or flicker. The Frames tab lists them for every frame.
Drop it into the box. An animated PNG shows its frames in the Frames tab; a still PNG gets a note that there is no animation inside.
The Frames tab shows the frame count from the acTL chunk and checks it against the frames really in the file.
Each frame stores its own delay. The analyzer divides the frame count by the total length to give the average FPS.
Many chat apps, email clients and image editors only show the first frame. Convert it with APNG to GIF for those.
An APNG can hold a still image that only non-animating apps show. The analyzer tells you whether the first frame is part of the animation or a separate fallback.
No. The APNG is read in your browser and never leaves your device.
