A next-generation format based on the AV1 codec with superior compression - typically 50-90% smaller than PNG. Supports transparency, HDR, and wide color gamut. If you need the reverse conversion, try our AVIF to PNG converter.
Near-lossless quality. Best for archival, professional work, or images that will be edited further. Larger files but virtually indistinguishable from the original. Ideal for image optimization workflows.
Excellent balance of quality and file size. Recommended for most web use. Imperceptible quality loss for most images while achieving significant compression.
Good compression with visible but acceptable quality reduction. Suitable for thumbnails, previews, or when bandwidth is limited. You can also try PNG to WebP for broad browser support.
AVIF offers significantly better compression than PNG - often 50-90% smaller file sizes with comparable quality. This means faster page loads, lower bandwidth costs, and better user experience. AVIF also supports transparency, wide color gamut, and HDR, making it a superior choice for modern web applications. If you also work with other formats, check out our full list of image converters.
Yes! AVIF fully supports alpha channel transparency, just like PNG. When you enable "Preserve transparency" in the settings, all transparent areas in your PNG will be maintained in the converted AVIF file. This makes AVIF excellent for logos, icons, and graphics with transparent backgrounds. For icon-specific conversions, try our PNG to ICO converter.
For most web use, 75-85% provides excellent results with significant file size reduction. For photos where quality is critical, use 85-95%. For graphics and logos with sharp edges, consider using lossless mode or 90%+ quality to avoid compression artifacts around edges.
AVIF is supported in Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Edge 121+, Opera 71+, and Safari 16+. This covers approximately 93% of global web users. For older browsers, consider providing WebP or PNG fallbacks using the HTML picture element.
