PNG vs JPG

PNG

Lossless compression with transparency support. Best for graphics, logos, screenshots, and images with text or sharp edges. Larger file sizes but no quality loss. If you need to convert other formats to PNG, check out our JPG to PNG or BMP to PNG converters.

JPG

Lossy compression optimized for photographs. Smaller file sizes with adjustable quality. No transparency support - transparent areas become solid. For even smaller files, consider converting to WebP format which offers better compression than JPG.

Quality Settings Explained

90-100%

High quality with minimal compression. Best for photos you want to keep looking great. Larger files - ideal for print or archival purposes.

70-89%

Good balance between quality and file size. Ideal for most web images and email attachments. Consider using our Image Resizer alongside this for optimal web delivery.

50-69%

Noticeable compression artifacts. Good for thumbnails or when file size is critical.

Below 50%

Heavy compression with visible artifacts. Only use when file size is more important than quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

JPG files are typically much smaller than PNG files, especially for photographs. This makes them ideal for websites (faster loading), email attachments (smaller size limits), and storage (saves disk space). If you don't need transparency, JPG is often the better choice. For web-optimized images, you might also want to try PNG to WebP for even better compression.

JPG does not support transparency. When converting a PNG with transparent areas to JPG, those areas will be filled with the background color you select (white by default). You can choose from preset colors or pick a custom one. If you need to preserve transparency, consider keeping PNG format or converting to WebP instead.

For most purposes, 80-90% quality offers an excellent balance between file size and visual quality. For professional photography, use 95-100%. For web thumbnails or when file size is critical, 60-75% usually works well. You can also compress your JPGs after conversion for additional size reduction.
