PSD vs PNG vs JPG vs WebP

PSD

Adobe Photoshop native format. Preserves layers, masks, smart objects, effects. Large file sizes, limited app compatibility. Use our PSD to ICO converter to create icons from layered files.

PNG

Lossless universal format with full alpha transparency. Best for logos, UI assets, and any graphic needing crisp edges. See also: PNG to ICO and PNG Compressor.

JPG

Lossy compressed format ideal for photos and complex images. Much smaller files than PNG at comparable visual quality. No transparency (alpha channel) support.

WebP

Modern Google format with excellent compression and transparency. 25-35% smaller than PNG at equal quality. Supported in all modern browsers. See our PNG to WebP tool.

Layer Export Modes Explained

Flatten All

Best for final exports. Merges all layers including hidden ones into a single image. Most complete representation of your design.

Visible Only

Best for work-in-progress. Only visible layers are included. Useful when you have multiple design states or want to export a specific variation.

Each Layer

Best for asset extraction. Every individual layer exported as a separate file. Perfect for UI sprites, icon sets, or components from a single PSD.

Common Use Cases

Web Graphics

Export designs to web-ready PNG or WebP at 72-96 dpi. Use our Image Resizer to hit exact pixel targets.

Print Preparation

Set 300 dpi for professional print. Export to PNG or JPG for services that don't accept PSD format.

Sprite Extraction

Use "Each Layer" mode to extract every element as its own PNG - perfect for icon sets, buttons, and UI components.

Use the Output DPI section. Select 300 dpi for print quality. Note: DPI sets the resolution metadata tag but does not resize pixel dimensions - use the Resize option to change the actual pixel count.
