Understanding Twitter Photo Sizes

When you view a photo on Twitter (now X), you usually see a compressed version. Twitter stores several quality variants of every image, and this tool gives you access to all of them:

Original

The full resolution file exactly as uploaded, up to 4096x4096 pixels. This is the version Twitter itself never displays in the timeline - and the best one to save.

Large

Up to 2048 pixels on the longest side. This is what Twitter shows when you click a photo to expand it. Great balance of quality and file size.

Medium

Up to 1200 pixels - the size shown in the timeline on most screens. Good for sharing or embedding where full resolution is not needed.

Small

Up to 680 pixels - the compact preview size. Useful for thumbnails and quick previews with minimal file size.

Twitter serves photos as JPEG (sometimes with a .jfif extension), PNG for graphics with transparency, and WebP for modern browsers. All formats are fully supported. Curious why JPEG has so many file extensions? Read our guide: JPG, JPEG, JPE, JFIF - Why So Many Names? If you need a different format after downloading, try JPG to PNG or PNG to WebP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paste the tweet URL into the field above and click "Get Photos". Keep the quality set to "Original" - this fetches the full resolution file directly from Twitter's servers, which can be up to 4096x4096 pixels. This is higher quality than right-clicking and saving the image from the timeline, which only gives you a compressed version.

Yes! Tweets can contain up to 4 photos. When a gallery is detected, all photos are selected by default - just click "Download Selected". When you download 3 or more photos, they are automatically packaged into a ZIP archive for convenience.

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is simply a type of JPEG file. Twitter sometimes serves images with this extension, but they are fully compatible with any program that opens JPEG images - you can rename .jfif to .jpg if needed. For the full story behind these names, read our guide: JPG, JPEG, JPE, JFIF - Why So Many Names?
