Check any DDS game texture - compression (BC1 to BC7, DXT, BC5 normal maps), DX10 header, mipmaps, cubemap faces, alpha and sRGB - and see why a mod texture shows black, blurry or not at all. Just need a picture? Use DDS to PNG.
Need to edit the texture? Convert it with DDS to PNG, edit, and save back as DDS in your texture tool.
| Format | Also called | Bits/pixel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BC1 | DXT1 | 4 | Opaque colour, cut-out alpha |
| BC3 | DXT5 | 8 | Colour with smooth alpha (older games) |
| BC4 | ATI1 | 4 | Single channel - masks, height |
| BC5 | ATI2 / 3Dc | 8 | Normal maps (two channels) |
| BC6H | - | 8 | HDR - skies, lighting |
| BC7 | - | 8 | High quality colour + alpha (DX11+) |
BC7 looks clearly better than DXT5 at the same size, but needs DirectX 11 and the DX10 header - some older games and tools cannot read it.
Drop it in. The Compression line shows the exact format - BC7, BC3 / DXT5, BC1 / DXT1 and so on - and whether it uses the DX10 header.
The summary and checks show the mip count and whether the chain goes all the way down to 1 x 1. The Mipmaps tab draws each level.
Yes. All six faces are listed and drawn in the Faces tab, and missing faces are flagged.
Common causes are a format the game does not support, a missing DX10 header or the wrong alpha mode, and a cut-off file. Each one is a check here.
Save any mip or face from the tabs here, or convert whole textures with DDS to PNG.
No. The DDS is read and decoded in your browser and never leaves your device.
