WhatsApp often re-encodes images with non-standard JPEG markers or saves WebP files with a .jpg extension. Windows Photos is strict about file headers and refuses to open them. This means the source file was truncated - some of the pixel data was never saved (often because a download or transfer was interrupted). The green or gray color is the JPEG decoder filling in missing data with a default value. We detect this automatically and report a recovery percentage. Enable "Auto-crop" in settings to get a clean image containing only the recovered portion. If you have the original file, please try again with a fresh copy.
We can recover most files with damaged headers, wrong extensions, or partial corruption. However, if the actual pixel data is destroyed (for example, only a few KB of a multi-MB file remain), there may be nothing left to recover. We try five different strategies before giving up. If your file truly has no readable image data, we will tell you honestly rather than produce a fake "repaired" file.
We re-encode at 92% JPEG quality (95% for PNG/WebP), which is visually identical to the original for most photos. The pixel data itself is not modified - only the file structure around it.
