Red has the longest wavelength of visible light, and it grabs attention faster than any other hue. That is why it marks danger, errors and urgent actions everywhere from traffic lights to form fields.
Its meaning depends on the culture. In the West it stands for love and passion as well as danger; in China it is the color of luck and celebration, worn at weddings and the New Year.
Historic reds came from surprising places: carmine from crushed cochineal insects, and vermilion from cinnabar, a toxic mercury mineral. Cadmium reds replaced them in the 1900s.
