Make a UPC-A or UPC-E barcode for products sold in the US and Canada.
Type 11 digits and we add the check digit - or let us shorten a UPC-A to the compact UPC-E for small packs.
Download it at the true print size and every change is scan-tested. Selling outside North America too? The same number works as an EAN-13 barcode.

Dates are YYMMDD. Fixed-length fields (01, 00, dates) need their exact number of digits - we check the GTIN and SSCC check digits for you.
Start with an AI in brackets, like (01)09501101530003(17)271231, and it becomes a GS1 Data Matrix - the one used on medicine and food. Anything else is stored as plain text.
Shoppers' phones open this link; tills read the GTIN, lot and dates from it. Point your own domain at a page for the product, or use id.gs1.org, which forwards to the brand's registered page.
Retail barcodes should keep their digits - cashiers type them in when a code will not scan. OCR-B is the classic barcode font many packaging printers and book publishers ask for - we draw it as outlines, so no file ever has a missing font.
One code per line - or a CSV with the columns content, name (file name) and label (text on a label sheet). Every barcode gets the current type, size and format. Pick PDF with the Labels page to print the whole list on label sheets.
Got a UPC on a product and want to see what it is? Point your camera at it with the Barcode Scanner. Want to double-check a number before ordering labels? Paste it into the Check Digit Calculator.
| UPC-A | UPC-E | EAN-13 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digits | 12 | 8 | 13 |
| Where | US and Canada | Small US packs | Everywhere |
| Same number? | Yes | A short form of some UPC-A numbers | UPC-A with a 0 in front |
| Size at 100% | 37.29 x 25.93 mm | 22.11 x 25.93 mm | 37.29 x 25.93 mm |
UPC-E only works when the UPC-A number has enough zeros in the right places - type a UPC-A on the UPC-E tab and we tell you if it can be shortened.
The 12th digit protects against misreads.
Multiply the digits in odd positions by 3 and the even ones by 1, add them up, and the check digit brings the total to the next multiple of 10. For 03600029145 the sum is 58, so the check digit is 2: 036000291452.
Every step for your own number: Check Digit Calculator.
Amazon and big retailers check UPCs against the GS1 database. Cheap resold numbers often fail that check.
Amazon FBA labels starting with X00 are Code 128, not UPC - pick Code 128 in the Barcode Generator.
Do not shrink a UPC under 80% or cut its bar height - many tills reject short bars.
Pick PDF and the Labels page for Avery 5160, 5167 or 5163 sheets.
One thing to know before you print: a barcode is only a picture of a number. For shops, Amazon and other marketplaces the number itself has to be yours - you get it from GS1 or, for books, from your national ISBN agency. Made-up or bought-on-eBay numbers can get listings removed.
Yes - free, no sign-up and no watermark. You can print the barcodes on anything you sell. The UPC number itself should be yours, from GS1 US or GS1 Canada.
Join GS1 US (or GS1 Canada) to get a company prefix, or buy single GTINs from GS1 US if you only have a few products. Then make the barcode here.
UPC-A is the full 12-digit code. UPC-E is a compressed 8-digit version for small packs like gum or cans - it only exists for UPC-A numbers with enough zeros. Both scan as the same product.
Yes - put a 0 in front. 036000291452 as UPC-A is 0036000291452 as EAN-13, and every scanner treats them as the same item. Make it with the EAN-13 Barcode Generator.
For the product barcode, yes, as long as the UPC number is registered to your brand at GS1. For FBA labels, Amazon uses FNSKU codes (Code 128) - pick Code 128 in the Barcode Generator.
At 100% a UPC-A is 37.29 x 25.93 mm (about 1.47 x 1.02 in) including the margins. 80% is the smallest most tills read reliably. PDF and EPS downloads are exact in millimetres.
Usually the check digit does not match - one digit was mistyped. Remove the last digit and we will work out the right one, or paste the number into the Check Digit Calculator to see why.
