How to remove the background from an AVIF

  1. Add your AVIF images. Drop one or more still or animated AVIF files, or try a sample. Still images are processed right in your browser.
  2. Pick a method. AI subject for photos and products, Edge fill for logos on a plain background, Colour key for a green screen or one exact colour.
  3. Check and refine. Drag the before / after slider. Soften or shrink the edges, clean the colour fringe, add a background colour or crop to the subject.
  4. Touch up by hand. Paint with Erase to remove leftovers, or Restore to bring back parts of the subject. Zoom in for fine detail and undo any stroke.
  5. Download. Save as transparent PNG, WebP or AVIF - or JPG with a background colour. Several files come as one ZIP.

Need the result smaller for the web? Run it through Compress AVIF or resize it with the Image Resizer.

Which method should you use?

Tips for a clean cut-out

  • Check on pink. Switch the preview background to pink - leftover edges stand out far better than on the checkerboard.
  • Paint the last bits. Use Erase for a stray shadow and Restore for a lost hand or strand of hair - zoom in to 3x or 4x for detail.
  • Shrink by 1 px when a thin line of the old background stays around the subject.
  • Keep Clean colour fringe on. It stops a white halo from showing when you place the image on a dark page.
  • Lower the tolerance in Edge fill or Colour key when parts of the subject disappear.
  • Selling online? Pick a white background, Crop to subject and JPG - the usual marketplace format.

Animated AVIF and transparency

Animated AVIF files are processed frame by frame on our server with Edge fill or Colour key, and the frame timing is kept.

The safest format for a transparent animation is animated WebP - it plays in every modern browser and in most chat apps. Animated PNG keeps every pixel lossless but is larger.

Starting from a GIF instead? Use the GIF Background Remover, then turn it into AVIF with GIF to Animated AVIF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop your AVIF file on the page. The tool recommends a method - AI subject for photos, Edge fill for logos on a plain background - and shows the result straight away.

Fine-tune the edges if you like, pick PNG, WebP or AVIF, and download. Want a different format first? Use AVIF to PNG.

AI subject finds people, products and animals on any background, including busy ones. Edge fill removes a plain background that touches the borders and never touches the subject in the middle - best for logos and icons.

Colour key removes one or more exact colours everywhere in the image, such as a green screen or the white inside letters.

Still AVIF images are not uploaded - the AI model and every other step run in your browser.

Only two things use our server: animated AVIF files, and saving a still image as AVIF, because browsers cannot write AVIF yet. Those files get random names and are deleted automatically within 4 hours. See our Privacy Policy.

Yes. Edge fill and Colour key remove the background from every frame and keep the timing. Save as animated WebP, animated PNG (APNG) or AVIF.

AI subject works on still images only. To share the result as a GIF, run it through AVIF to GIF.

PNG is lossless and opens everywhere - the safe choice for editing and printing. WebP keeps the transparency at a much smaller size and is ideal for websites. AVIF is the smallest of all.

JPG has no transparency, so it uses a background colour - white is what most online shops ask for.

Yes. Under the preview, choose Erase to paint away leftover background, or Restore to paint back parts of the subject that were removed - the original shows faintly so you can see what to bring back.

Zoom in for fine work and undo any stroke with Ctrl+Z. Your touch-ups stay when you change other settings.

Open Edges: Feather softens the cut-out line, Shrink pulls the edge inwards to drop a leftover outline, and Clean colour fringe removes the old background colour from semi-transparent pixels.

For Edge fill and Colour key, a lower tolerance keeps more detail. Drag the before / after slider to check.

Still images are processed in your browser, so the limit is 50 MB per file and up to 20 files at once. Animated AVIF files can be up to 20 MB, 300 frames and 2000 px per side.

Bigger file? Shrink it first with Compress AVIF.
