EPS & AI Analyzer

Check an EPS or Adobe Illustrator file before it goes to print - the bounding box and real size, the app and version that made it, fonts, CMYK or RGB colours, spot colours and the embedded preview. Want to see it? Open it in the EPS Viewer.

How to analyze an EPS or AI file

  1. Add your file. Drop one or more .eps, .ai or .ps files into the box, or try a sample. Nothing is uploaded.
  2. Check the size. The bounding box gives the real artwork size in mm, inches and pixels at 72 and 300 dpi.
  3. Read the print checks. Fonts, colour mode, spot colours, previews and missing bounding boxes are flagged.
  4. Look deeper. Details lists the creator, version, fonts and colours; Structure maps every section of the file.

Sending to a printer? Ask whether they want fonts converted to outlines and CMYK - the checks tell you where your file stands.

Modern .ai files are PDFs with extra Illustrator data. Saved with "Create PDF Compatible File", most apps can show them.

Print checks explained

  • Fonts not embedded - the printer swaps in another font. Convert text to outlines or embed the fonts.
  • RGB colours - fine for screens; printers convert to CMYK and bright colours shift.
  • Spot colours - Pantone or custom inks that need their own plate.
  • No bounding box - layout apps cannot place the file.
  • No preview - Word and InDesign show a grey box until it is printed.
