Reverse GIF

Play any GIF backwards, turn it into a smooth boomerang, or rewind just one part. Watch the result live before you download - every frame delay and the loop are kept. Need other timing too? Try the GIF Speed Changer or trim it with the GIF Cutter.

How to Reverse a GIF

  1. Add your GIF. Drop an animated GIF into the box, browse for it or paste it with Ctrl+V.
  2. Pick reverse, boomerang or part. Reverse plays it backwards, Boomerang forward then back, Part rewinds only the frames you pick.
  3. Preview it. Press Play to watch the result with its real timing, and switch to Original to compare.
  4. Download. Press Reverse GIF, check the real file size and download it - or pass it straight to another GIF tool.

Starting from a video clip? Make the GIF with Video to GIF first, then rewind it here.

Reverse, Boomerang or Rewind a Part

Pick the tab that matches the effect you want.

Reverse

The whole GIF plays from the last frame to the first.

Perfect for things that un-break, un-spill or fly back into place.

Boomerang

Forward, then backward, in one smooth loop - also called a ping-pong GIF.

Short clips of 1-2 seconds bounce best.

Part

Only the frames you pick play backwards; the rest is untouched.

Show an action, then rewind just the punchline.

Why Reversed GIFs Sometimes Break

To save space, most GIFs only store what changes from one frame to the next.

Reverse those frames as they are and each one paints onto the wrong picture - you get holes, smears or ghost trails. That is why simple frame-flipping tools often fail on optimised GIFs.

This tool rebuilds every frame in full first, then plays them in the new order. Transparent GIFs stay transparent, and GIFs with 255 colours or fewer keep every pixel exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop your GIF into the box above - the Reverse tab is already picked. Press Play to watch it backwards, then press Reverse GIF and download it.

Every frame keeps its own delay, so pauses and fast parts stay where they belong.

Reverse plays the GIF from the last frame to the first. Boomerang plays it forward and then backward, so it loops smoothly like an Instagram Boomerang.

The turning frames are not repeated, so there is no stutter at either end.

Yes. Pick Part, then click the first frame of the part in the strip and Shift+click the last one, or type the frame numbers. That part plays backwards, the rest stays as it was.

Usually not at all. When your GIF uses 255 colours or fewer - most GIFs do - every pixel stays exactly the same. GIFs with more colours get their colours re-picked per frame, which is hard to spot.

A boomerang is about twice as long, so its file is bigger too. Compress GIF can shrink it afterwards.

Most GIFs are optimised: a frame often stores only the pixels that changed since the frame before. Played in a new order, those partial frames land on the wrong background.

This tool rebuilds every frame in full before reversing, so the result always looks right.

Yes, open Speed and pick 0.25x to 4x. For finer control - an exact length, a fixed frame rate or a delay per frame - pass the result to the GIF Speed Changer.

Not normally - reversing runs in your browser. Only very large GIFs (more than your browser can hold in memory) are sent to our server, and they are deleted there within 4 hours.

Up to 60 MB in the browser. GIFs with huge frames are reversed on our server, up to 15 MB. Bigger than that? Shrink it with the GIF Resizer first.
