About Mac Folder Icons

macOS allows you to customize folder icons by pasting images directly onto folders in Finder. Custom folder icons help you visually organize your files - mark project folders with client logos, categorize folders by color, or add visual indicators for quick identification.

This tool generates PNG images styled like native macOS folders. After downloading, you can apply the icon to any folder using the Get Info panel (Cmd+I). For a complete icon package, convert your PNG to ICNS format using our converter.

Use Cases

Mark repositories with framework logos - React, Vue, Python, or language icons. Try our PNG to ICO converter for Windows icons too.

App Development

Create custom folder icons for your app resources during development and testing phases.

Any size works, but we recommend at least 256x256 pixels for crisp results. The tool will scale your image to fit on the folder. Larger source images produce better quality when generating 512x512 icons for Retina displays.

macOS uses different icon sizes in different contexts - 512x512 for Retina displays and Quick Look, 256x256 for standard icons, 128x128 for Finder previews, and smaller sizes for lists and sidebars. Having all sizes ensures your icon looks great everywhere.

Yes! The folder icons you create are yours to use however you like - personal organization, client projects, app development, etc. Just make sure you have rights to any images you upload.

After creating your folder icon, use our PNG to ICNS converter to generate a native macOS icon file. ICNS files bundle multiple sizes together and are required for Mac application icons.

No, all processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript Canvas. Your images never leave your device - they're processed locally and the generated icons are created on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to any server.
