MOBI is the Mobipocket ebook format that Amazon adopted for the early Kindle. A .mobi file packs the book text (usually LZ77-compressed), images, and metadata into a single PalmDOC database - the same structure behind .prc and classic .azw files. Although Amazon has moved on to newer formats, millions of books from Project Gutenberg, publisher stores, and personal libraries still circulate as MOBI, which is why a browser-based MOBI reader remains so useful.
This viewer decodes the format natively in your browser: it unpacks the database records, decompresses the text, reads the title, author, and cover from the metadata, resolves embedded images, and wires up the book's internal links - no Kindle, no conversion step, no upload.
Classic .azw is MOBI with Amazon branding and opens here when DRM-free. AZW3 (KF8) is a newer container with richer formatting - this viewer detects it and points you to a conversion path. KFX is Amazon's current locked format that only Kindle apps read. For converting between formats, the free Calibre desktop app is the standard tool; convert to EPUB and our EPUB Viewer gives you the same reading experience as this page.
For modern ebooks use the EPUB Viewer, for fixed-layout books the PDF Viewer, and for manuscripts the DOCX Viewer or ODT Viewer. The full collection is on the file viewers page.
Upload your .mobi file here and read it directly in your browser - no Kindle, no Amazon account, no software install. The book opens with its cover, chapters, and images, plus search, bookmarks, and read-aloud. Works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebooks, and mobile.
MOBI is the Mobipocket ebook format that Amazon adopted for early Kindle devices. A .mobi file packs the book text (usually LZ77-compressed), images, and metadata into a PalmDOC database. Amazon has since moved to AZW3/KF8 and KFX, but millions of books still circulate as .mobi files.
DRM-free .azw files in the classic MOBI format open fine. AZW3 (KF8) is a newer container this viewer detects but does not decode yet - convert it to EPUB with the free Calibre app and use our EPUB Viewer, which offers the same reading features.
Books bought from the Kindle store are locked with Amazon DRM, which no standard reader can open - that is a property of the file, not of this viewer. Only DRM-free books, such as those from Project Gutenberg, publisher direct sales, or your own conversions, can be read here.
The free Calibre desktop app converts DRM-free MOBI files to EPUB, PDF, and most other ebook formats. For quick text reuse, this viewer exports the book as TXT or HTML directly in your browser.
