How to open a MOBI file online

  1. Open your Kindle book. Drop a .mobi, .azw3, .azw or .prc file anywhere on this page, choose it from your device, paste it, or try a sample book.
  2. Read your way. Turn pages with the arrow keys, a swipe or a tap, or switch to scrolling. Pick the font, size, spacing, margins and a light, sepia or night theme.
  3. Find and mark passages. Search the whole book, jump through the chapters, highlight passages and add bookmarks. The reader remembers your page.
  4. Convert or save. Convert the book to EPUB, have it read aloud, or save it as TXT, HTML or PDF and download its pictures.

What is a MOBI file?

MOBI is the Mobipocket ebook format.

Amazon bought Mobipocket in 2005 and built the first Kindles on it, which is why so many older Kindle books are .mobi files.

Inside, a MOBI file is a Palm database: the book's HTML is cut into compressed records, followed by the pictures and an EXTH block with the title, author, cover and other details. Like EPUB, the text reflows to fit any screen.

MOBI, AZW, AZW3, KFX and PRC

PRC and AZW are the same Mobipocket format under other names - AZW is what the Kindle store used, usually with DRM. AZW3, also called KF8, arrived in 2011 with real CSS styling, and many .mobi files carry both an old MOBI and a KF8 version of the book.

KFX is the format of today's Kindle store downloads and only opens in Kindle apps and devices. Every DRM-free MOBI, AZW, AZW3 and PRC opens on this page, and EPUB books open here too or in the EPUB Viewer.

How to open MOBI files on any device

Windows and Mac

Neither Windows nor macOS can open MOBI files on its own. The free Calibre app reads and converts them, or drop the book on this page for a quick read with nothing to install.

iPhone and iPad

Apple Books does not read MOBI. Open this page in Safari and pick the file from the Files app, or convert it to EPUB here and add the EPUB to Books.

Android

Most Android phones have no MOBI reader. Chrome opens this page, so a MOBI in your downloads is one tap away, and the EPUB you convert here also works in Google Play Books.

Kindle

Older Kindles still read MOBI files copied over USB. Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI since 2022, so convert the book to EPUB first and send that.

How to convert MOBI files

Once the book is open, the buttons under the reader save it in other formats.

  • MOBI to EPUB - Convert to EPUB builds a standard EPUB 3 with the chapters, pictures, contents and book details.
  • MOBI to PDF - press Print / PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.
  • MOBI to TXT or HTML - Save TXT writes the plain text, Save HTML one web page with the pictures built in.

Why won't my MOBI or AZW file open?

When a book refuses to open, the reader tells you why. These are the usual causes.

The book has Amazon DRM

Kindle store purchases are locked to the buyer's Amazon account and only open in Kindle apps and devices. We never remove DRM - DRM-free books, such as Project Gutenberg downloads, open right away.

It is a KFX or Topaz file

KFX and the old Topaz (AZW1) format are Kindle-only. No browser reader can draw them.

The file is damaged

A download that stopped early leaves the book's record table or text broken. Download the book again and it will usually open.

It is really another format

Renamed files happen. PDFs belong in the PDF Viewer, and plain text books in the TXT Viewer.

MOBI is the original Mobipocket format that early Kindles used. AZW is Amazon's name for the same format, often with DRM, and AZW3 (also called KF8) is the newer Kindle format from 2011 with much better styling.

Most often the book has Amazon DRM, which only Kindle apps can unlock - and we never remove DRM. KFX and old Topaz (AZW1) files are Kindle-only formats, and a download that stopped early leaves a damaged file.

Not by email or the Send to Kindle app - Amazon stopped accepting MOBI there in 2022 and takes EPUB instead. Convert the book to EPUB on this page first, then send the EPUB.

Copying a MOBI file to an older Kindle over USB still works.
