PDF to Markdown Converter

Turn PDFs into clean Markdown - headings, lists, links and tables included.

Ready for GitHub, Obsidian, Notion, static sites or your AI chat. It all runs in your browser. Scanned pages? Read them with Image to Text first.

How to Convert PDF to Markdown

  1. Add your PDF. Drop one or more PDFs into the box or browse for them. They stay on your device.
  2. Check the Markdown. Read the result in the Markdown or Preview tab. You can edit the text right there.
  3. Fine-tune if needed. Toggle tables, headers and footers, page breaks or front matter, or pick a page range.
  4. Copy or download. Copy the Markdown, download the .md file, or a ZIP for three or more PDFs.

Changing an option re-converts every PDF instantly, so you can compare results.

What Becomes What

PDFs do not store structure, only where each word sits and in which font. The converter reads those clues.

In the PDFIn your Markdown
Larger or bold title lines#, ##, ### headings by size
Lines starting with bullets or numbers- and 1. lists, indented by level
Bold and italic words**bold** and *italic*
Link areas[text](https://...)
Text in aligned columnsPipe tables with a header row
Monospaced linesFenced code blocks

Text made by Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or LaTeX converts best. Scans have no text layer - use Image to Text for those.

Tips and More Tools

  • Locked PDF? Remove the restrictions with Unlock PDF first.
  • Only need a few chapters? Type a page range, or cut the file with Split PDF.
  • Need an editable Word file instead? Use PDF to Word.
  • Fix capitalisation in bulk? The Text Transform Tool does that in one click.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop your PDF in the box. The Markdown appears a moment later with a live preview next to it. Press Copy or Download .md.

The PDF is read inside your browser, so it is never uploaded.

Headings (detected from larger font sizes), paragraphs, bold and italic text, bulleted and numbered lists, links, simple tables and monospaced code blocks. Line breaks inside paragraphs and hyphenated words are joined back together.

Fancy layouts - multi-column magazines or text boxes - come out as plain paragraphs in reading order.

Simple tables with clear columns become Markdown tables, with the first row as the header. Tables with merged cells or text wrapping inside cells may come out as lines of text instead - switch Detect tables off if you prefer that everywhere.

A scanned PDF is a picture of text, so there is nothing to extract - the tool tells you when a page has no text. Use Image to Text to read the words with OCR first.

Yes. Switch on Remove headers and footers. Lines that repeat at the top or bottom of most pages, and lone page numbers, are dropped. You can also add a --- line between pages, or YAML front matter with the title, author and page count for Obsidian, Jekyll or Hugo.

Yes to both. Type a page range like 1-5, 9, and drop up to 20 PDFs. Each PDF becomes its own .md file; three or more download together as a ZIP.

Markdown is plain text with light formatting. It drops straight into GitHub, wikis, Notion, Obsidian and static site generators, and it is the friendliest format for AI chat tools - fewer tokens than the PDF and a clear structure.

Want to check a Markdown file later? Open it in the Markdown Viewer.

No - only the text. The Markdown keeps the place of the text around them. To save the pictures, export the pages with PDF to PNG.
