How to Convert PDF to Word

  1. Add your PDFs. Drop one or up to 10 PDF files into the box. Each one is checked right away: page count, preview, password and whether it is a scan.
  2. Pick a mode. Auto makes text PDFs editable and reads scans with OCR. Choose Exact look if the layout matters more than editing.
  3. Choose the format. DOCX for almost everyone, or DOC, ODT and RTF. Optionally set a page range or smaller pictures.
  4. Convert and download. Press Convert, check pages, tables and size, then download each file or a ZIP.

Tips for a Clean Word File

  • Huge report? Convert just the chapter you need with Pages, or cut it first with Split PDF.
  • Heavy file with photos? Choose Pictures - Smaller. If the PDF itself is huge, run it through Compress PDF first.
  • Only need the text? PDF to Markdown gives clean text with headings and lists.
  • Crooked or faint scan? OCR PDF has rotation, contrast and table options and can make the PDF searchable.
  • Need an e-book instead? PDF to EPUB makes text that reflows on e-readers.

Yes. Scanned pages are only pictures, so the text has to be read first (OCR). We detect scans automatically and read them in your browser in 30 languages - the file is not uploaded for that.

Pick the document language under OCR language for the best result. For tables in scans try Image to Text, or make the PDF itself searchable with OCR PDF.

In Editable mode, yes: tables become real Word tables with their borders and shading, and pictures are placed where they were. The results card shows how many tables and pictures were found.

Big photos can make the Word file heavy. Choose Pictures - Smaller to save them as JPEG, which often makes the file several times smaller.

Yes, if you know the password. When a PDF is locked, a password box appears next to it. Type the password and press Unlock - the file is checked in your browser first, then converted.

We cannot open PDFs whose password you do not have. To remove a password for good, use Unlock PDF.

Yes. Open Pages and enter a range such as 3 to 7 - handy for long reports. You can add up to 10 PDFs at once; three or more come back as one ZIP.

To pull pages out of a PDF without converting, use Split PDF.

DOCX is right for almost everyone - Word 2007 and newer, Google Docs, Pages and LibreOffice all open it. DOC is for Word 97-2003, ODT for LibreOffice and OpenOffice, and RTF opens in nearly any editor but keeps only simple formatting.

Text PDFs are uploaded over HTTPS and converted on our server. The upload is deleted as soon as the Word file is made, and the Word file is deleted right after your browser downloads it - anything left over is removed automatically within 4 hours.
