How to Resize a GIF in Photoshop Without Losing Quality
Resizing an animated GIF in Photoshop takes six steps.
The two that matter most are Image Size with the right resample method and the Save for Web (Legacy) export.
If you just need a smaller GIF right now, the free online GIF Resizer does it in your browser in about 30 seconds.
Quick Answer
- File > Open the GIF - frames land in the Timeline.
- Image > Image Size, chain icon on, unit Pixels.
- Resample: Bicubic Sharper to shrink, Nearest Neighbor for pixel art.
- File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy), format GIF, Looping Forever.
- Click Save. Never use Save a Copy for animated GIFs.
Why GIFs Need Extra Care
A GIF is a stack of frames, each with its own delay and a palette of at most 256 colours.
When you resize it, every frame is resampled and the palette is rebuilt. Pick the wrong export and you get a single still frame, banding or a file twice the size.
Must all be resized together, or the animation jumps.
Shrinking blends pixels into new colours that need a fresh palette.
GIF pixels are fully clear or fully solid, so soft edges need a matte colour.
How to Resize a GIF in Photoshop, Step by Step
These steps work in any recent Photoshop version with the Timeline panel, including Photoshop 2025 and 2026.
-
1
Open the GIF
Go to File > Open and choose your GIF. Photoshop puts every frame on its own layer and builds a frame animation for you.
Open Window > Timeline if you do not see the frames along the bottom.
Only see layers, no frames? Open the Timeline menu (top right of the panel) and choose Make Frames From Layers.
-
2
Check the animation first
Press Play in the Timeline. Note the delay under each frame and the loop setting (usually Forever) in the bottom-left corner.
That way you can check after resizing that the timing is still the same.
-
3
Open Image Size
Choose Image > Image Size (Alt+Ctrl+I on Windows, Option+Cmd+I on Mac).
Image Size works on the whole document, so every frame is resized at once. There is no need to select frames first.
-
4
Set the new size and resample method
Keep the chain icon between Width and Height switched on, so the proportions stay locked. Set the unit to Pixels and type the new width.
Leave Resample ticked and choose the method that fits your GIF:
- Bicubic Sharper (reduction) - the best choice for making a GIF smaller.
- Nearest Neighbor (hard edges) - for pixel art and emotes, so edges stay crisp.
- Preserve Details 2.0 - when you have to make a GIF bigger.
Click OK.
Shrink in whole steps where you can (50%, 25%). Odd ratios such as 37% blur thin lines on every frame.
-
5
Preview the resized animation
Play the Timeline again. Check that the motion is smooth, the delays are unchanged and transparent edges look clean.
-
6
Export with Save for Web (Legacy)
Choose File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S or Option+Shift+Cmd+S). This is the only Photoshop export that keeps the animation.
- Format: GIF, colour reduction Selective.
- Colors: 256 (try 128 if the file is too big).
- Dither: Diffusion, 80-100%.
- Transparency: on if your GIF has see-through areas.
- Looping Options: Forever - or Once.
Check the file size in the bottom-left corner of the preview, then click Save.
Do not use File > Save a Copy or Export As for GIFs - both save only a single still frame.
File > Save a Copy (GIF) and File > Export > Export As both write just one frame. If your GIF stopped moving, export it again with Save for Web (Legacy).
Best Save for Web Settings for a Resized GIF
The export dialog decides most of the final quality and file size.
| Setting | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Colour reduction | Selective | Keeps the colours your eye notices most; Adaptive suits photos too. |
| Colors | 256, or 128 | Fewer colours mean a smaller file; flat graphics often look the same at 64. |
| Dither | Diffusion 80-100% | Smooths gradients; lower it to save bytes on flat art. |
| Lossy | 0-15 | Small values cut the size a lot with little visible change. |
| Transparency + Matte | On, matte = page colour | Avoids white halos on dark backgrounds. |
| Interlaced | Off | Adds bytes and no benefit for animations. |
| Looping Options | Forever | Or Once for slides and email banners. |
Want a different loop count later without opening Photoshop? The GIF Loop Changer sets forever, once or any number of plays.
Shaving off the last few kilobytes is easier with Compress GIF after export.
GIF Sizes for Discord, Slack and Twitch
Chat apps have strict size and file limits for animated emojis and stickers.
| Where | Size (px) | File limit |
|---|---|---|
| Discord emoji | 128 x 128 | 256 KB |
| Discord sticker | 320 x 320 | 512 KB (APNG in the app) |
| Discord message | Any | 20 MB on a free account |
| Slack emoji | 128 x 128 | 128 KB |
| Twitch animated emote | 112, 56, 28 | 1 MB |
| Email banner | 600 wide | Keep under 1 MB |
Limits change from time to time - check the platform if an upload is refused.
The GIF Resizer has one-click Discord presets that fit these limits.
For a still avatar, save one frame as a square PNG with GIF First Frame.
Fixing Common Problems
The GIF stopped moving
It was saved with Save a Copy or Export As. Re-export with Save for Web (Legacy).
The file got bigger
Lower Colors to 128, add Lossy 5-15, or compress it afterwards with Compress GIF.
Blurry or soft edges
Use Bicubic Sharper for shrinking, or Nearest Neighbor for pixel art. Avoid enlarging small GIFs.
White halo around edges
Set Matte in Save for Web to the colour of the page the GIF will sit on.
Timing feels different
Check the delay under each frame in the Timeline. Fix speed later with the GIF Speed Changer.
Photoshop is slow with big GIFs
Hundreds of frames use a lot of memory. Trim unneeded frames first with the GIF Cutter.
Alternatives to Photoshop
Photoshop is great for frame-by-frame edits, but it is a lot of tool for a resize.
| Option | Cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| ConvertICO GIF Resizer | Free, in the browser | Fast resizing, Discord presets, batch, keeps transparency |
| Adobe Photoshop | Subscription | Editing frames, text and effects before export |
| GIMP | Free desktop app | Image > Scale Image, then Export As .gif with "As animation" |
| Other online resizers | Often free, with limits | Quick one-off jobs; check upload size limits and privacy |
| gifsicle (command line) | Free | Scripts and batches: gifsicle --resize-width 480 |
Need it smaller in a different way? Cut away the edges with the GIF Cropper.
For sharing on social media, a video loops everywhere and is usually much lighter - convert with GIF to MP4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Open the GIF, change its size with Image > Image Size, and export it with File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). That export is the only one that writes all the frames.
Save a Copy and Export As produce a still image.
Use Bicubic Sharper to make a GIF smaller and Preserve Details 2.0 to make it bigger. For pixel art, emotes and small icons, choose Nearest Neighbor so the edges stay crisp.
Yes. Save for Web (Legacy) has its own Image Size box under the preview, with a percentage field and a Quality menu (pick Bicubic Sharper). It resizes the exported GIF and leaves your open document untouched.
Photoshop rebuilds the colour palette and dither pattern, and its GIF optimisation is basic. Try 128 colours, a lower dither amount or the Lossy slider (5-15).
Or run the result through Compress GIF, which usually saves another 30-60%.
That halo comes from the Matte colour in Save for Web. Set Matte to the background colour your GIF will sit on, or to None for hard transparent edges.
Discord emojis display best at 128x128 and must be under 256 KB. Stickers are 320x320 and must be under 512 KB.
The GIF Resizer has one-click Discord presets that hit those limits for you.
Yes. The free ConvertICO GIF Resizer keeps every frame, delay and transparent pixel and needs no install. GIMP is a free desktop option: Image > Scale Image, then File > Export As with "As animation" ticked.
