STL is the lingua franca of 3D printing: nearly every model on Thingiverse, Printables, and MyMiniFactory, every slicer, and every CAD export pipeline speaks it. The format describes a model purely as a mesh of triangles - no color, no materials, no units - which is why a quick STL viewer is so handy for checking what a file actually contains before slicing or buying.
STL comes in two flavors: compact binary (the common one) and human-readable ASCII. This viewer detects and opens both, renders the mesh with realistic shading, and reports the numbers printers care about - bounding-box size in millimeters (the 3D printing convention), mesh volume for material estimates, and triangle count as a complexity gauge.
OBJ adds color and texture support, STEP stores exact CAD surfaces instead of triangles, and 3MF is the modern ZIP-based print format. STL remains the universal exchange format, and the built-in STL to OBJ export covers the most common conversion need. The viewer sums the signed volume of every triangle in the mesh - the standard method slicers use. The figure is accurate for closed, watertight models; meshes with holes or self-intersections may report a smaller value.
Yes. Click the OBJ button to convert the loaded model to a Wavefront OBJ file directly in your browser - no upload, no waiting. Very large meshes beyond about 1.5 million triangles should be decimated first.
Yes. The model is parsed and rendered locally in your browser using WebGL - it is never uploaded to our servers. That makes the viewer safe for client work and unreleased designs.
Not yet - this viewer is dedicated to STL. If you drop an OBJ, STEP, 3MF, PLY, or G-code file, it identifies the format and tells you how to get an STL out of it. OBJ support is on our roadmap.
The viewer renders both sides of every triangle, so most flipped-normal issues still display fine. If a model looks wrong here, it often has mesh errors - run it through your slicer's repair function or a tool like Meshmixer before printing. Still having trouble?
