Annotate PDF

Highlight, underline and strike out text, drop sticky notes, add text boxes with callout arrows and draw with a pen - right in your browser. Everything is saved as real PDF comments that open in Acrobat, Chrome and any reader, and you can export them all as text. Need to change the page itself? Try Edit PDF.

How to Annotate a PDF Online

  1. Open your PDF. Drop the PDF into the box or browse for it. The pages open with Highlight ready to go.
  2. Mark the text. Drag across words to highlight, underline, strike out or squiggle them. Change the colour in the side panel.
  3. Add comments. Drop sticky notes, text boxes with callout arrows, freehand pen marks, boxes, circles and arrows.
  4. Review the list. Every annotation appears in the Comments panel. Jump to it, edit it, delete it or export them all as TXT.
  5. Save. Press Save annotated PDF. Your marks are saved as real PDF comments, or flattened into the pages if you prefer.

Proofreading a contract or a thesis? Strike out the old word and leave a note with the new one - reviewers can accept or reply to each comment in their own reader.

Real Comments, Not Stickers

Many online tools paint your marks onto the page as a picture. Annotate PDF saves them as proper PDF annotations, the same kind Acrobat creates.

That means they show up in the Comments list of any reader, keep your author name and date, and can still be edited or removed later. Want them locked in instead? Switch on Flatten annotations into the page before you save.

Sending the file on? Shrink it with Compress PDF, or add a signature with Sign PDF.

Tips

  • Select first, then click: already selected some text? Click any markup tool and it is applied at once.
  • Callout arrows: select a text box and drag its blue dot to point at the spot you mean.
  • Scanned pages: run OCR PDF first to make the words selectable, then highlight them here.
  • Need to change the words? Edit PDF adds and covers text in the page itself, and PDF to Word handles big rewrites.
