ICO to PNG Converter

Get every size inside an ICO file back as a transparent PNG - or paste a website address to grab its favicon. Going the other way? The PNG to ICO converter makes icons.

How to convert ICO to PNG

  1. Add your ICO files. Drop up to 50 ICO or CUR files into the box, paste one with Ctrl+V, or paste a website address to grab its favicon.
  2. Pick the sizes. Every size inside the icon shows as a thumbnail. The best copy of each size is ticked - click to add or remove one, or press Largest.
  3. Adjust if you like. Smallest packs the PNG tightly without losing a pixel. Fill the background, enlarge pixel-sharp or rename the files - every option starts closed.
  4. Convert and download. Press Convert to PNG. One or two PNGs download directly, more come as a ZIP with each size named, like icon-32x32.png.

Need a size the icon does not have? The Icon Resizer makes new ones from the largest image.

What is inside an ICO file?

An ICO file is a small container that holds the same picture at several sizes.

Windows picks 16 px for file lists, 32 px for the taskbar and 256 px for big desktop icons.

This converter shows each size as a thumbnail, so you choose exactly which PNGs you get. Each one is named after its size, like icon-48x48.png.

Want to see the colour depth and layout of every layer first? Open the file in the ICO Analyzer.

Grab a favicon from any website

Paste a website address, like wikipedia.org, into the link box under the drop area.

We look for the icon the site declares, fall back to /favicon.ico, and open it here - ready to save as PNG. Pasting a direct link to an .ico file works too.

Need every icon a site has, Apple touch icons included? The Favicon Extractor lists them all.

Tips for the best PNG

  • Only small sizes inside? Open Resize - icons under 128 px are enlarged pixel-sharp, ideal for pixel art. For smooth edges try the Image Upscaler.
  • The same size twice? Older icons store 4-bit and 8-bit copies for Windows XP. Best of each keeps only the sharpest one - tick All to get them too.
  • Need a white background? Pick the White background preset, or convert straight to JPG.
  • Want smaller files? Smallest is already lossless and tight. For more, run the PNGs through Compress PNG.
