About WAV Format

WAV is Microsoft and IBM's uncompressed audio format, used in recording, editing and broadcast.

Because nothing is thrown away, a WAV is the reference copy you convert from. The trade-off is size: one minute of CD-quality stereo is about 10 MB.

What these samples cover

  • Bit depths - 8-bit, 16-bit (CD), 24-bit (studio) and 32-bit float.
  • Sample rates - 8, 16, 22.05, 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz.
  • Encodings - linear PCM, IEEE float and G.711 u-law (telephone).

Use them to check that your app reads every WAV flavour, not just 16-bit stereo.

To trim a clip, the audio cutter opens WAV files too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The audio was made by ConvertICO for this page and is free for testing, development and demos.

WAV stores raw, uncompressed samples. 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo needs about 176 KB for every second of sound, about 10 MB a minute.

Audio editors use 32-bit float so levels can go above 0 dB without clipping during mixing. Many simple players and converters cannot read it, which makes it a good test file.

G.711 u-law is the compression used by phone systems and many VoIP and IVR platforms. It is 8-bit, 8 kHz mono.

Yes. Open a sample in the Audio Joiner or Audio Cutter and export it as MP3.
