Why convert GIF to MP4?

An MP4 is usually a small fraction of the size of the same GIF.

It also looks better, because H.264 is not limited to 256 colours per frame.

Instagram, WhatsApp, X and Discord all turn uploaded GIFs into MP4 video anyway. Converting first gives you control over size and quality, and a smaller file loads faster on your own site too.

How to convert GIF to MP4

GIF to MP4 for Instagram, WhatsApp and X

Instagram does not accept GIF uploads. The Instagram preset makes a 30 fps H.264 MP4 of at least 3 seconds with a silent audio track. Want a square or 4:5 frame? Size it with the Instagram Post Resizer first.
WhatsApp stores GIFs as short MP4 clips, so an MP4 is its native format. The preset keeps the file under 15 MB at 720p.
X (Twitter) also plays GIFs as video. The preset makes a 1080p file of at least 1 second. Saving one from a post? Use the Twitter GIF Downloader, or Twitter to MP4 for regular videos.
Discord plays MP4 inline and loops short clips. The preset stays under 10 MB, the free upload limit at the time of writing.

Exact timing, loops and transparency

Many converters force every GIF to one frame rate, so uneven animations speed up or stutter.

We read each frame's delay and place every frame on its own timestamp. Delays of 0 or 1 hundredths of a second play as 100 ms, exactly like Chrome, Firefox and Safari show them.

Loops repeat whole plays of the animation, so a 3-loop MP4 lasts exactly three times the GIF. Transparent areas are filled with white, black or your own colour - for a see-through video, use GIF to WebM. Want a cut-out subject first? Try the GIF Background Remover.

Embed an MP4 like a GIF

These four attributes make a video behave exactly like a GIF: it starts by itself, loops, makes no sound and stays inline on phones.

Tips for smaller MP4s

Size first. 720p instead of 1080p cuts the pixels by more than half.
Small or Balanced quality is plenty for reaction GIFs and memes.
Long screen recordings? Trim them with the GIF Cutter or shrink them with the GIF Resizer first.

An MP4 has no loop flag inside the file - the player decides. Instagram, WhatsApp, X and Discord loop short clips on their own, and a web page loops with the loop attribute on the video tag.

For players that play once, the Loop option puts the animation 2 to 20 times into one file.

Pick the Instagram preset. It makes an H.264 MP4 at up to 1080 px and 30 fps, repeats short GIFs until the video lasts at least 3 seconds, and adds a silent audio track, because Instagram sometimes rejects videos without one.

MP4 video cannot be see-through, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour: white by default, or black or any colour you pick.
