Locked 7Z files

7-Zip locks archives with AES-256 and can hide the file names as well.

When you drop such a file, the converter asks for the password, unlocks it in your browser and builds a normal ZIP. Want the ZIP locked too? Set a password in the settings - AES-256 for strength, ZipCrypto when it must open in Windows Explorer.

Forgot the password? Nobody can recover it, us included. For new archives, a strong password kept in a password manager saves the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop the .7z file on this page and press Convert to ZIP. Everything inside is unpacked in your browser and packed again as a ZIP with the same folders, names and dates.

No 7-Zip install needed.

7Z uses LZMA2 compression, which makes archives 10-40% smaller than ZIP for text, documents and code. ZIP compresses less but opens everywhere without extra software.

Use 7Z to store or send big folders, and ZIP when the other person just needs to double-click it. Going the other way? Try ZIP to 7Z.

Older Windows versions, macOS, iPhone and most Android phones have no built-in 7Z support. Windows 11 reads 7Z only since its late-2023 update.

Converting to ZIP fixes that - every system opens ZIP with a double-click. To just look inside, use the 7Z File Viewer.

Yes. 7Z files locked with AES-256 convert fine, even when the file names are hidden. Type the password when asked - it never leaves your browser.

You can also lock the new ZIP with a password of your own under Password for the new archive.

Usually yes, because ZIP compresses less than 7Z. Text and documents often grow by 10-40%, while photos, videos and music stay about the same.

The exact size before and after is shown for every archive. Pick Maximum compression to keep the ZIP as small as possible.

Yes. Select all the parts together - archive.7z.001, .002, .003 and so on - and they are joined before converting.

If a part is missing you get a clear message naming it. The File Joiner can also glue parts back into one file.

7Z files are read by a WebAssembly engine that handles about 1.9 GB on most devices.

The ZIP is built in memory, so outputs above about 1.5 GB may fail on phones and older computers - convert big archives one at a time. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!

No. The 7Z is unpacked and the ZIP is built by your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so nothing leaves your device - not the files and not the password.
