How to read CBR and CBZ comics online

  1. Open your comic. Drop a CBR, CBZ, CB7 or CBT file on the page, or press browse. A ZIP or RAR full of images works too.
  2. Pick a view. Read one page at a time, as two-page spreads, or scroll down like a webtoon. Turn on right to left for manga.
  3. Turn the pages. Use the arrow keys, tap the left or right half of the page, swipe on a phone, or drag the page slider.
  4. Come back later. Your page is remembered. The comic waits on your shelf with a Continue reading button.

Reading on a Kindle or Kobo that does not know comic formats? Turn the comic into a PDF with CBR to PDF first.

A comic reader that stays out of the way

Three ways to read

One page at a time, two-page spreads like a printed book, or one long scroll for webtoons.

Real manga mode

Right-to-left order for keys, taps, swipes and spreads - switched on by itself when the comic says so.

Picks up where you left off

Every comic remembers its page, and your shelf keeps the last ones you read.

Made for fingers too

Swipe to turn pages on a phone, tap the edges, or go fullscreen for nothing but art.

Light on memory

Only the pages around you are kept ready, so 300-page omnibus editions stay smooth.

Private

Comics are unpacked by your browser and never uploaded - not even the file name.

What are CBR, CBZ, CB7 and CBT files?

A digital comic book is simply an archive of page images with a different extension.

The pages are sorted by file name, so page-2.jpg comes before page-10.jpg - this reader sorts numbers the way people do.

ExtensionArchive insideNotes
.cbrRARThe most common format. RAR4 and RAR5 open here; password-locked RARs need WinRAR. Look inside with the RAR File Viewer.
.cbzZIPEasy to make yourself with the Archive Creator - just rename the .zip.
.cb77-ZipSmaller files, password protection with AES-256. More in the 7Z File Viewer.
.cbtTARRare, uncompressed - opens instantly. See the TAR File Viewer.

Reading comics on a phone or tablet

Phones do not open .cbr files by themselves - this page does.

Pick the comic from Files or Downloads, then swipe to turn pages. Fit width makes small speech bubbles readable, and Scroll view feels like a webtoon app.

Your shelf remembers each comic for 14 days, so you can close the tab and continue on the bus home.

Keep, share or convert the pages

Save any page as its original image with one click.

Need all of them? The Archive Extractor unpacks every page, Compress JPG makes them smaller and the 4K Image Upscaler sharpens old scans.

To repack a CBR as a CBZ, convert it with RAR to ZIP and rename the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop the .cbr file on this page and the first page appears in a second or two. Nothing needs to be installed and the comic is never uploaded - your browser unpacks it.

CBZ, CB7 and CBT comics open the same way.

Both are just archives full of page images. A CBR is a RAR archive renamed to .cbr, a CBZ is a ZIP archive renamed to .cbz.

CB7 uses 7-Zip and CBT uses TAR. The pages inside are the same JPG or PNG images, so this reader opens all of them. Curious what else is inside? Peek with the RAR File Viewer or the ZIP File Viewer.

Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your phone, pick the comic from your files and swipe left or right to turn pages.

Webtoon mode scrolls down like a comic app, and fullscreen hides everything but the page.

Switch on Right to left (manga) or pick the Manga preset. The arrow keys, page halves, swipes and the slider then all follow Japanese reading order, and two-page spreads show the right page first.

Comics whose ComicInfo.xml says Manga switch it on by themselves.

No. The comic is unpacked by your browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly, so it never leaves your device.

The recent comics shelf is stored in your own browser too - clear it any time with one click.

Yes. The last page of every comic is saved in your browser, and the comic stays on your shelf with a Continue reading button.

Opening the same file again later jumps straight back to your page.

The most common reasons are a download that was cut short, a password-protected RAR (browsers cannot decrypt those yet) or a comic split into several .part files. Locked CBZ and CB7 files do work - you are asked for the password.

Damaged ZIP-based comics can often be saved with ZIP Repair. Still having trouble? Please contact us and we'll be happy to help!

Yes. Press Convert to PDF and the comic opens in the CBR to PDF converter, which keeps the original JPEG pages untouched.

A PDF opens on any e-reader, tablet or printer that does not know comic formats. Want a regular ZIP instead? Use RAR to ZIP.
